Pilot launch in Greece

On January 20th, 2025, the RuralMED Mobility project took a significant step forward with the official launch of its pilot activities in Western Macedonia, Greece. This marks a key step in the project’s mission to promote sustainable mobility in rural and remote Mediterranean areas.

The Regional Development Fund of Western Macedonia inaugurated the pilot with the deployment of two state-of-the-art electric vehicles (EVs). These vehicles are now in the hands of the Municipality of Amyntaio and the Technical Services Directorate of the Region. They will serve as a model for greener, low-emission transportation in rural areas.

Key highlights of the pilot launch
  • Deployment of Electric Vehicles: Two electric vehicles have been leased for an 18-month period, each with a capacity for at least four passengers. These vehicles will cover an estimated 20,000 km per year, providing much-needed transport solutions for rural communities.
  • Charging Infrastructure Installation: In parallel, two charging points have been installed in the region. Equipped with 22 kW Type 2 three-phase chargers, these stations will support the growing demand for electric mobility and ensure the sustainability of the pilot project.
  • Real-Time Monitoring and Data Collection: The charging stations feature Wi-Fi/Ethernet connectivity for real-time monitoring, allowing for continuous data collection and optimization of the network.
Next Steps in the project

The launch of the pilot activities in Western Macedonia marks the beginning of an ongoing effort to expand electric vehicle infrastructure and services across the region. Educational campaigns and training programs will also be rolled out to inform local authorities and the public about the benefits of electric mobility and the transition to greener transport solutions.

As the project progresses, it will provide valuable insights into the integration of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in rural Mediterranean areas, contributing to a greener, more connected future.
