RuralMED Mobility: Bringing sustainable solution to rural Mediterranean areas

RuralMED Mobility is a European project working to promote the adoption of electric mobility and sustainable transport solutions in underserved rural and remote areas across the Mediterranean.

Why is this project needed?

Rural and remote regions often face major challenges in accessing clean, modern mobility options. Lack of charging infrastructure, long travel distances, low population density, and limited public transport make private vehicle dependency and carbon emissions particularly high in these areas. RuralMED Mobility addresses these challenges by testing innovative solutions that can be replicated across the Mediterranean.

How are we doing it?

The project implements seven pilot initiatives in different countries, combining the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, shared electric vehicles, and on-demand transport services. These pilots focus on improving connectivity for residents, reducing environmental impacts, and enhancing mobility options for vulnerable groups and tourists alike.

Data-driven decisions for better mobility

To support informed policy-making, RuralMED Mobility also develops a monitoring platform to collect real-time data from the pilots. This platform helps local and regional authorities assess the performance of mobility solutions and make evidence-based decisions to scale them up.

A step towards a greener Mediterranean

Through these actions, the project contributes to the low-carbon transition, reduces transport emissions, and improves the connection between rural and urban areas, ensuring that the green transition reaches every corner of the Mediterranean.

RuralMED Mobility is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED Programme.
