Students and young people explore sustainable mobility in Kozani, Greece

11/05/2026

The RuralMED Mobility project held on April 2 a new awareness and information event on sustainable mobility and electric mobility in Kozani (Greece), bringing together students, researchers and local stakeholders to discuss the future of transport in rural areas.

The event was co-organised by our two Greek partners, the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) and the Regional Development Fund of Western Macedonia (RDFWM), and hosted by the University of Western Macedonia. It focused especially on engaging young people in the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility models.

Participants included students from the 1st Vocational High School (EPAL) of Grevena, accompanied by their teachers, as well as engineering students from the University of Western Macedonia. Through presentations and practical demonstrations, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges and opportunities linked to electric mobility in rural and remote territories.

During the event, Petros Dallas (CERTH) presented the progress of the RuralMED Mobility project and the results achieved so far in Western Macedonia, including the deployment of electric vehicle charging stations in Amyntaio and Kozani, the introduction of electric vehicles supporting the ‘Help at Home’ programme and the technical services of the region, and the development of digital monitoring tools for mobility and CO₂ emissions reduction. In the coming months, it’s expected to explore the potential expansion of the charging indrastructure and to strengthtening cooperation with local stakeholders to promote electric mobility in rural and remote areas of Western Macedonia.

The technical session was delivered by Dr. Dimitrios Tsiamitros (University of Western Macedonia / INNORA), who explored key technological, environmental and practical aspects of electric mobility.

Particular interest was generated by the contribution of the Perseus Racing Team of the University of Western Macedonia. Mr. Nikolaos Savvopoulos and Mr. Konstantinos Tsianis presented the design and construction of an electric racing vehicle. The session was complemented by a guided tour and live demonstration in the vehicle construction area, offering participants a direct and hands-on experience of electric mobility in practice.

The event underlined the importance of education, innovation and citizen engagement in promoting sustainable mobility, while encouraging younger generations to play an active role in the green transition.
