The RuralMED Mobility Final Event took place on 16–17 June 2026 in Portalegre (Portugal) and Badajoz (Spain), bringing together project partners, public authorities, stakeholders and mobility experts to review the progress achieved over the last two years and discuss the future of electric mobility in rural and remote areas.
The two-day event was jointly organised by AGENEX, JUNTAEx, AREANATejo and CIMAA and reflected the strong cross-border and transnational cooperation that has characterised the project since its launch.
A first look at pilot results
The first day, held in Portalegre, was dedicated to project partners and invited stakeholders. Participants visited the Portuguese pilot action, which combines electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and shared mobility solutions for municipal services.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to present the first results from the seven pilot actions being implemented across Mediterranean regions. These pilots include charging infrastructure, shared electric vehicles and innovative mobility services designed to address the specific challenges of rural territories.
Although monitoring activities will continue during the coming months, preliminary results already show encouraging levels of use and positive feedback from both citizens and public authorities. Several pilot actions are demonstrating that electric mobility solutions can be successfully deployed beyond urban centres, contributing to more sustainable and accessible mobility systems in rural communities.
The 6th Transnational Forum in Badajoz
The second day of the event was marked by the celebration of the 6th Transnational Forum in Badajoz, which was open to public authorities, mobility stakeholders and users interested in sustainable transport.
The forum provided a platform to share the work carried out by the consortium, discuss the challenges and opportunities of rural electric mobility and exchange experiences among different Mediterranean territories.
Participants also had the opportunity to hear the perspective of electric vehicle users and public authorities, highlighting the importance of cooperation, citizen engagement and evidence-based decision-making to accelerate the transition towards cleaner mobility solutions.
Looking ahead
As RuralMED Mobility enters its final implementation phase, partners will continue monitoring pilot actions and collecting additional data to maximise the impact of the project and support the transferability of its results to other Mediterranean regions.
The Final Event confirmed the value of transnational cooperation in addressing common mobility challenges and reinforced a key message emerging from the project: electric mobility is not only possible in rural areas — it is already becoming a reality across Mediterranean territories.
